A Day

Sunday is a day of rest, right? Not so much for me as I keep my sister’s kids on Sundays. The one who has a 13, 4, 3, and 1 year old. The kids are awesome, don’t get me wrong, but wow, are they full of energy. The three year old’s name is Coren. He is what you think of when someone describes a child as “all boy.”

He is full on wild child. Don’t get me wrong, he is a loving kid, he just can’t seem to be still for more than 15 seconds, nor can he stay out of trouble for more than a minute. Coren is sneaky. He is the only little kid I know who can sneak from his bedroom, down the hall, past the living room, to his Mom’s room, with no one hearing him.

It isn’t just me, either. He does it to his Mom and Dad. It is like he floats down the hall, without a sound being made. The worst part is he wants in her bedroom, as that is where all the cool stuff is. Or at least that is what little kids seem to think.

You remember it, don’t you? Mom and Dad always have stuff in their room that the kids want. Chocolate that the rugrats aren’t supposed to know about. The scissors and markers that the little ones will use to either cut their hair, or draw a masterpiece on Mommy’s newly painted hallway.

The art supplies that consist of glitter and glue. You know, all that kind of stuff.

Coren knows how to get into that room, and find everything! I do mean everything. He has been caught with scissors, markers, all sorts of things he shouldn’t have. It doesn’t matter where my sister puts the stuff, it could be on the top of a closet shelf, locked behind a padlock, that the key is lost to, and nailed shut. This little Houdini wannabe will still get into it.

So, we wait. Or threaten to put a damn cat bell on him, but more wait, to catch him. yesterday, somehow he snuck past his Dad, into the bedroom, and under the bed, without his Dad hearing him. He wasn’t doing anything, just hiding from his nap.

Oh, yes, it was naptime, he thought it would be amusing to hide from his Dad. Of course, Dad goes to check on him, he isn’t in bed, Dad frantically looks for him. Or not so frantically anymore. Coren has pulled the hiding trick so many times it is more of a “Where are you, you little monster!” than anything else.

The best one? One time, he disappeared. They looked for him, all over, inside, outside, in the closets, under beds, under tables and chairs. He was finally found in the china hutch cupboard, asleep. He had crawled in there and gone to bed.

His poor parents. Can you imagine what he is going to be like at 16?
